E-book: Strategy House - setting direction with vision, mission, strategies and values

By Christian Nyvang Qvick

What is the book about?

This book answers a key question: How do the four core concepts, mission, vision, strategies and values, become clear navigation tools for your organization - instead of ending up as airy words on coffee cups and websites?

In the book, the four concepts are given a gold wash to make it clear to you what each one means.

You'll also be introduced to the strategy house, a simple model that helps you work cohesively with mission, vision, strategies and values.

You will learn how to formulate and communicate your mission and vision as a leader, so that both can add meaning and set the direction for what you and your employees need to succeed together.

You'll also gain insight into how to develop and embed a set of values that can promote desired behaviors. You'll also be presented with tools to help you take strategies from paper to practice.

The book is based on solid research, is written in a personal and accessible language and is filled with real-life cases.

It also includes several practical tools that are easy to pick and use - for example, concepts for facilitating visioning processes, developing values or implementing strategies.

In short, the book is a guide to strategic organizational development and is especially aimed at managers, management educators and consultants who work with management and organizational development.

What do mission, vision, values and strategies actually mean?

The mission is an expression of your organization's reason for being. In short, it focuses on the value your organization was put on earth to create.

The vision points forward and is about the future that is within sight, but still out of reach. So, the vision is about what you're particularly keen to achieve in the coming years.

Values are the guiding beliefs that guide employee behavior. In other words, the values become the guidelines that make it clear what behavior is inside and outside the organizational playing field.

Finally, there are the strategies. They are the efforts you prioritize time and resources to move from where you are now to where you want to be in the future. Metaphorically, the strategies become the bridge that connects the present situation with the desired future situation.

In summary, the mission is about what you should do. The vision is about what you want. The values are about what you live by. And the strategies are about what you prioritize.

The four concepts each have their own HV focus.

For the mission, the focus is on the why: Why do you exist?

The vision focuses on where: Where do you want to go?

Values revolve around what: What should guide the way you act?

And finally, the strategies focus on the how: How will you realize the vision?
