E-book on talent development in research environments

Talent Development - Image with people studying

Business as usual or should we develop talent?

A significant proportion of research talent leaves the university environment too early. This results in a significant loss of sought-after talent. Talent development and retention has therefore become a key issue for rectors, deans and research leaders. But they often lack a practical and implementable strategy.

With this e-book, we want to help with this strategy to make it easier to attract, develop and retain research talent.

This work requires finding the right balance between attracting more talent and developing existing talent. The competition for talented researchers is fierce. Research-oriented companies in both the private and public sectors are competing for the same sought-after researchers as universities are. And while universities are unlikely to win on salary, they can offer other equally important factors - such as professional communities, work/life balance and clear career prospects.

In the eBook, we explore the untapped potential of prioritizing talent management even more in universities. We also dive into two key terms: talent management and talent development, which often create challenges when it comes to strategic talent development.

Our goal is to inspire reflection and debate on how universities can address the increasing competition for talent while creating a stimulating and sustainable research environment.

Testimonials from the book

"We have to face the fact that we can no longer take it for granted that the best young research talents want to work at the university. They can't bear to be here on the terms we offer. Things are changing and I talk to many researchers of both genders who want time for family and want a life outside."

"We need to look at the working environment. It's not acceptable to have such a poor work-life balance and people think it's so intense. I'm afraid that we're losing research talent and missing out on the knowledge they have"
