Cross-functional management

Cross-functional leadership is about optimizing your organization's horizontal value chains and creating a more citizen-centric culture where managers and employees focus on creating agile collaboration spaces around the common core task.

At LEAD, we advise and help leaders create agile organizations and organizational cultures that enable collaboration and innovation across disciplines, departments, organizations, suppliers and citizens.

Our approach is based on distinguishing between five types of boundaries

We draw on years of practical experience combined with research on the importance of boundaries and how to lead effectively across boundaries. We focus on how leaders and organizations can increase efficiency and performance by turning boundaries into a resource for collaboration and innovation for the benefit of citizens.

Our approach to boundary-crossing management is based on a distinction between five types of boundaries:

  1. Vertical boundaries across hierarchical levels in the organization
  2. Horizontal boundaries across organizational functions and entities
  3. Stakeholder boundaries across the organization's collaboration with citizens, businesses, associations, etc.
  4. Demographic boundaries across differences in gender, age, ethnicity and nationality
  5. Geographic boundaries across localities, regions, countries and time zones (Ernst and Chrobot-Mason, 2011).

All development activities are tailored to the individual organization, and we offer all kinds of development activities related to cross-functional management, including

  • Presentation on how to increase efficiency, well-being and quality through boundary-crossing leadership
  • Workshops on how you as a leader can strengthen the management of your organization's cross-functional value chains
  • Development programs that build personal and organizational capability for cross-functional leadership.
