New management basis: Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq in Greenland

In Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq in Greenland, like many other public and private organizations, they sometimes experienced challenges in implementing their good development projects. Specifically, there was a demand for greater clarity around roles, responsibilities and tasks in the municipality. Therefore, they contacted LEAD, and in close collaboration, we have developed and implemented a new management foundation that has created clarity and commitment among all managers and employees.

Management framework for the implementation training

Linking talent and leadership development

Above illustrates the connection between the implementation training, talent and leadership development program in Kommuneqarfik Semersooq. The intention is to ensure that a strategic direction is created with the development of consultants, managers and leadership talent that pulls the organization in the same direction. The three development processes are designed as a complementary process that together ensure strategic development of the overall capacity of the organization.

An exemplary collaboration

The collaboration between LEAD and Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq has been long, and we have collaborated on many processes and tasks.

"The collaboration has in many ways been exemplary for an internal/external consultant collaboration, where we have complemented each other in the best possible way", says Kim Martin Nielsen from LEAD

Helene continues, "LEAD has helped with many things, and it has been very valuable to have an expert partner behind us who has been able to help design the processes, ensure quality assurance, and who has given legitimacy and credibility to the processes we have run with top management, among others."

Involvement and anchoring at the top

The new leadership framework was developed with input from across the organization, and several workshops and kick-off seminars precede the implementation that is currently underway.

"The involved process and the fact that the process has been anchored at the top has really paid off. There has been good support and ownership, and the two top management layers are united around the management foundation"

- Helene Horsbrugh, Head of Development in Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq until the end of March 2019.

Among other things, we have trained a facilitator corps along the way, who have gathered input for the management foundation.

"We can feel a completely different level of commitment in the organization than usual. More people have expectations and ask about it. And of course, it's a commitment for the executive board"

- Else Momme Development Consultant.

Relationship building and experience sharing

We have continuously adapted every single process step to the local context and have really enjoyed working with LEAD, which has been both educational and enjoyable," Helene concludes.

"We didn't get an off-the-shelf product from LEAD, and everything was adapted to the conditions here in Greenland. It has been good and necessary to work closely together, because here in Greenland, like many other places, there is skepticism about "know-it-all consultants". It has given credibility that it has also been internal consultants they have met".
