Each level of leadership has unique tasks and challenges that cannot be solved with the same leadership skills. A new research project challenges the assumption that good leadership is the same no matter what level you lead at. Read what you need to pay special attention to in order to succeed as a leader - at your level.
At each level of leadership, there are tasks and challenges that cannot be solved with the same leadership skills that made the leader successful at another level of leadership. A number of researchers at Aalborg University have developed the theory "The Public Leadership Pipeline", which dispels the notion that you as a leader can apply the same "golden" principles throughout the organization.
Instead, the theory suggests what public leadership at each level of management requires in terms of skills, work values and priorities. The Leadership Pipeline distinguishes between the different levels of leadership in order to accurately define the task at each level and focus on the shift from one level of leadership to another.

The Public Leadership Pipeline
Model 1.1 The Public Leadership Pipeline
As the leader moves up in the organization from manager level to leader level, he/she goes through a series of transitions as illustrated in model 1.1.
The transitions between each level are difficult as they require unlearning old skills, work values and priorities and learning new ones. As a result, leaders often stumble - sometimes with serious consequences for their careers.
