What is onboarding?

The onboarding period is a transitional phase where new employees move from one state to another. Their job, role, culture, colleagues, and workplace all change—and this requires support. Effective onboarding focuses on managing the process the new employee goes through: from the signing of the contract to the first day at work and through the initial months in the new role.

Managing this process involves, among other things, how the new employee:

  • Experiences the organization’s culture
  • Builds relevant relationships
  • Is met with realistic and challenging expectations regarding responsibility, effort, and results
  • Feels welcomed—with attention to both tangible aspects (phone, computer, workspace, etc.) and intangible elements (such as communication and collaboration)

The benefits of onboarding with LEAD

A carefully designed onboarding process brings a range of crucial benefits for both organizations and new hires. First and foremost, structured onboarding enables seamless integration of new employees into company culture, values, and workflows. This leads to increased job satisfaction and reduced stress, as newcomers feel welcome and informed from day one.

An effective onboarding process also accelerates productivity. By providing clear guidelines and training on work tasks, new hires can quickly begin contributing to organizational goals—resulting in a shorter ramp-up period and a more efficient workforce.

Furthermore, good onboarding helps build long-lasting relationships between the company and its employees. By offering opportunities for interaction with colleagues, mentors, and leaders, new hires establish connections that support their professional growth within the organization. This strengthens employee loyalty and reduces turnover.

Finally, robust onboarding enhances your company’s reputation. When newcomers have a positive experience early on, they are likely to share it with their networks—attracting top talent and positioning your organization as an attractive employer.

In short: well-structured onboarding helps organizations achieve higher productivity, improved retention, stronger culture, and a positive public image. It is an investment in both employee and organizational success.

Onboarding and the attractive workplace

In an attractive workplace, onboarding impacts recruitment, engagement, and development—and extends beyond just the first three to six months typically allocated for onboarding programs.

We have extensive experience collaborating with both public and private organizations on narrow as well as broad onboarding initiatives. We leverage this experience to help you address your unique challenges effectively.

Onboarding is a leadership responsibility

If you want to take onboarding seriously, our recommendation is to treat it as both an HR task and a leadership responsibility.

The onboarding process is about much more than well-planned meetings or tasks. New employees must feel included—and sense clear direction for how their skills will support the organization’s strategy and objectives.

This requires leadership mandate; managers bear significant responsibility when welcoming new employees. This responsibility often fades because HR typically develops excellent onboarding programs that introduce newcomers to the organization—but these programs cannot stand alone; hiring managers must be integrated into them.
