Erika Jørgensen

Erika is a strategic leader with over 40 years of international experience in humanitarian aid, policy, and crisis response. She has held leadership roles at the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the Danish Refugee Council, specializing in emergency response, food security, and multilateral coordination.

She served as Regional Director for WFP in East and Central Africa, overseeing humanitarian operations, funding strategies, and digital transformation efforts. Erika has also held senior positions at WFP’s headquarters, including Director of Budget and Programming, Director of the WFP Office in New York, and Secretary of the WFP Executive Board, where she worked closely with UN member states on food security and humanitarian diplomacy.

Erika has extensive field experience, having led WFP country operations in Nepal, Armenia, and Asia during major crises, including the Nepalese insurgencies and Cyclone Nargis. She played a critical role in high-level negotiations, emergency coordination, and the development of strategic financing tools for humanitarian response.

Since retiring from WFP, Erika has remained actively engaged in global development. She served on the board of the Danish Society of Engineers, Global Development, organizing key discussions on food security and climate crises. She is also a board member of Copenhagen Hazard Mapping, focusing on a world where governments and humanitarian actors can proactively utilize data in mapping, forecasting, and reducing the impact of hazards including disasters, conflict related hazards and climate change. Furthermore, she mentors professionals through The Rome Institute.
